Sparkbrook Referee c. 1890

The Coventry based Sparkbrook Manufacturing Co. started building bicycles in 1883. They built ordinaries and tricycles and were rather succesful in this.

This safety with serial number 4805 is an early diamond frame that was originally fitted with the broad hollow cushion tires. Look at the bracket and the way the mudguards are mounted. Chain is on the left side, a feature that is also known of old Premiers. The bike has a characteristic bar between seat and top tube and the step is also quite unique. It still shows its quality in a lot of details. I do not really like the restauration work, its all too shiny and a lot of details are wrong, like the saddle and the spoke nipples. But I absolutely like the model!
